World Café Themes and Questions

A. Quality Teaching

1) What is your teacher doing when you are effectively learning?  With lessons?  With content (the stuff)?  With grading and marking?  Where are you learning?

2) How would you like to see teaching be different?  With lessons – how you learn.  With content (the stuff).  With grading and marking.  Where you are learning.

3) Describe a quality teacher.  How are they teaching?  Where are they teaching?  What are they teaching?  When are they teaching?

 

B. Learning in the Future

1) How will learning for 13 – 18 year olds in 2040 be different that it is now?  Where is it taking place?  What are students doing?  What does it look like?

2) What will 13 – 18 year olds need from their schooling/ education when they finish/ graduate in 2040 to have a successful life?

3) What will schools need to look like in 2040 to educate students?  Where will learning be taking place?

 

C. Learning With Technology

1) What is happening when technology is supporting your learning?  How do you feel?  What are you doing?  Where are you?

2) What are the challenges/ barriers to technology supporting your learning?  What are you doing?  Who are you with?  Where are you?

3) How do you think students will use technology to learn in the future?  Where will they be?

 

D. Personalization of Learning

1) When are you experiencing personalized learning – learning tailored to your interests, passions and abilities?  Where are you?  What are you doing?  Who are you with?

-                      Presentation: explanation of a café and what we want to accomplish

  • Purpose: exposing student voice, students to express themselves
  • After school (4. to 8.), evening of Tue.15th (or 8?) of March at Winslow gym

-                      Member Discussion: What is the purpose/value of the cafe? who should be on your team? Emphasize DIVERSITY.

-                      Member responsibility: Get your team together. Get your adult reps together (PAC, admin, teacher). Figure out transportation.

After introducing the executives and getting the opportunity to hear Mr. Grant speak, each school gave their thoughts on

  2. What SLC represents

Here are the ideas:

GLENEAGLE SECONDARY

Methods

  • Classroom surveys (required courses), handed out by teachers
  • For specific issues, approach teams/clubs/groups

Role of SLC

  • Organize and lead in the development of the school system
  • To help students’ voice be heard by authoritative figures, who can help the students provoke change

CABE SECONDARY

Methods

  • Walk into classes and take polls/start discussions with students
  • Use website to share surveys
  • Give surveys to focus groups
  • During Assemblies
  • In announcements
  • Create a suggestion box
  • Have informal discussions (ie. in smoke pit)
  • Raise awareness and allow students to become more involved, show people they make a difference
  • Get leaders more involved to encourage others to get more involved
  • Receive different perspectives from all kinds of people
  • Give students a chance to show their potential and true leader skills
  • *Decisions are made without any students’ opinions even though said decisions affect students

Role of SLC

  • Listen to students, hear their concerns
  • Modify anything that needs to be changed for the benefit of all students, hearing every voice, from every kind of person

CENTENNIAL SECONDARY

Methods

  • Leadership meetings
  • VOX
  • Opinion box – any student can contribute their opinions
  • Newsletters
  • Discuss ideas with classes
  • School newspaper (Catalyst)

Role of SLC

  • Representation of various ideas that students may have
  • Helps strengthen any leadership skills and encourages students to establish and open mind towards new ideas

PORT MOODY SECONDARY

Methods

  • Focus groups selected at random
  • Surveys – GT manager & manage Bac, and during lunch
  • Discussions during homeroom advisory

Role of SLC

  • Provides a student voice by allowing a forum for student input in district affairs
  • Allows students to be active members of their community

CHARLES BEST SECONDARY

Methods

  • Ask/survey each school department (athletic, drama, music, fine arts, etc.)
  • Ask during homeroom advisory
  • Surveys during lunch block
  • Get input from other leadership clubs within school
  • Discussions during staff & department meetings
  • Discussions in focus groups
  • Surveys at school bus stops

Role of SLC

  • A panel of students from every grade, interest and culture coming together to provide an overall view of students’ opinions
  • Explore different aspects and develop new skills of leadership

HERITAGE WOODS SECONDARY

Methods

  • Create a student council
  • Survey all extracurricular groups
  • Talk to teachers
  • Ask for feedback from a diverse group of students from the school
  • Discussions from all types of students during lunch/flex

Role of SLC

  • A vehicle for student voice and positive change

MAPLE CREEK MIDDLE

Methods

  • Form a student council (2 students from every team, 6 teams in school, and the two students get feedback from rest of their team)
  • Discussions during staff meetings (Admin talks to rest of staff about SLC’s ideas. Staff gives admin feedback)

Role of SLC

  • Relays student body ideas and their importance to the school board
  • Allows student leaders to develop important skills useful in life

SUMMIT MIDDLE

Methods

  • Announcements
  • Online surveys
  • TREK in person presentations
  • In class surveys
  • During assemblies
  • During Team Time
  • Teachers give digital presentations
  • Leadership groups

Role of SLC

  • Form a clear voice of the student body and ensuring that it is heard
  • Encouraging students to take action

MOODY MIDDLE

Methods

  • Each class nominates two students, then forms a council
  • In council, the two students give their class’ point of view to the rest of the council in order to find a common outlook on the matter at hand

Role of SLC

  • Receive students’ outlook on common issues or concerns that the district council has to resolve
  • An environment created to help students become future leaders

HILLCREST MIDDLE

Methods

  • Email surveys to teachers to print out and give to students
  • Go class to class for input
  • Set up table and allow students to give their opinions
  • Hold a superblock and pass out surveys
  • Have surveys during team meetings
  • A leadership group email or website for students to give their opinions by leaving a comment

  • Where students learn how to make an impact at our respective schools

  • Allow students to become better leaders and gain more responsibility for the school district
